NEW CURRICULUM APPROVED – APPLICATION FOR 2018 OPEN

The Master study course “Protected Area Management” has been relaunched and offers a next round of international students to deepen their knowledge and expertise in the inter- and transdisciplinary planning and management of protected areas. The 2-years postgraduate program – starting again in October 2018 - is now open for application!

New methods, proven contents

The new curriculum of the postgraduate study course with its review methodology includes now more practice-oriented and self-reflective elements, while the structure and the main learning goals remain the same. Within the re-launched program, students will focus even stronger on their own showcases and challenges from their working context. The small group size of up to 25 students allows close interaction between lecturers and students, effective individual and peer group coaching and in general a fruitful learning atmosphere.

The program is arranged in eight modules with a total of 62 days of presence and additional home assignments and intensive e-learning support. The courses take place at the University of Klagenfurt and in prominent protected areas in Central and Eastern Europe.

Education for Sustainable Development

New institutional arrangements give the opportunity to deal more intensive with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a cross-cutting issue during the studies. The Institute of Instructional and School Development within the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is the new responsible body of the MSc program. The institute focuses on learning arrangements, organisations, and the educational system and will enrich the MSc program with its methodological expertise for ESD.

As in the past, E.C.O. will cooperate closely with the University of Klagenfurt in setting up the course and field visits and engage renowned experts from various organisations and institutions as lecturers.

High demand for skilled professionals

Promoting sustainability, handling conflicts, increasing benefits, conserving biodiversity - the management of Protected Areas faces many different legal, administrative and technical challenges. The demand for skilled professionals in this field is high and still growing - as again emphasized at the EUROPARC Conference from 6th – 10th September in Portugal. Also, the “fitness check” of the Natura2000 directives revealed that not the legal framework is the main challenge, but the implementation of the EU directives on the ground. Again, skilled management staff is key to deal with the challenges in this complex and inter-disciplinary context.

Therefore, the interest for the re-launched MSc course “Protected Area Management” is high. A divers and intensive program, lots of exchange, coaching, inspiration and guidance is awaiting the participants of the course 2018-2020! Use your change and contact us, if you are interested to join the course.
