Future in the Alps – protected areas work package

The work package focusing on protected areas formed part of the project “Future in the Alps” by the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps CIPRA. The outcomes were intended to contribute to the construction of a substantiated knowledge base about the Alps (alpKnowhow). The aim of the project was to answer the question of what conditions would be necessary for protected areas to contribute at the same time to both the preservation of biodiversity and the stimulation of the regional economy. E.C.O. analysed numerous examples of best practice from within the Alpine region from this perspective, and derived current needs for action and future perspectives.
